Activity 3.2.1 – Natural Resources Review

Image
I started my concept map with natural resources as that is kind of the focus of the video from alexanderstreet-com.  From there I branched into the two resource types, renewable and nonrenewable resources. I also included natural resources alternatives as my third branch because some of those that fall under alternatives do use some natural resources in their production. From the non-renewable I branched into fossil fuels, while they may be renewable, they are considered nonrenewable due to the amount of time it takes to regenerate them. For renewable and nonrenewable I branched down into recycling seeing as it allows for both types of materials to be used again, this would also include reuse. I also included the fact that natural resources can become scarce because it was something I had never gave much thought to myself. Another branch I included for both renewable and nonrenewable was resource management as it involves using less of these resources. For our third bra...

Activity 3.1

According to the U.S. Census Bureau. (2018) Belize’s birth rate is approximately 20 births per every 1,000 people, while their death rate sits at approximately 5 per every 1,000 people. The population growth rate is 0.1%. The life expectancy for men is 72 years old and for women it is 78 years old. The average number of children per childbearing-aged females in 2020 was approximately 2.2. The gross national income is 5,880 per capita.   Northern America’s birth rate is approximately 11 births per every 1,000 people and their death rate is approximately 10 per every 1,000 people. The population growth rate is 1.5%. The life expectancy for men is 75 years old and for women it is 81 years old. The average number of children per childbearing-aged females in 2020 was approximately 1.6. The gross national income is 64,417 per capita.   Looking at these numbers we can see that Belize’s birth rate is higher by 9 every 1,000 people. The population growth rate for Belize ...

Activity 2.2.1 – My daily water use

My water usage:              Average the number of gallons used across all three bills.                     3,005+2,970+3,070=9,045/3= 3,015 gallons/month on average. Household Warter use per month by the number of people in your household.                      3,015/2=1,570.5 gallons/person/month   Per person per month number by 30 days.                     1,570.5/30= 50.25 gallons per day for one person.  City of Bellingham, Washington  Residential Water Consumption Calculator - City of Bellingham (cob.org) 217 gallon/day per person  Southwest Florida Water Management District Water Use Calculator | WaterMatters.org (state.fl.us) 104 gallons/day   Smart Water Mark  Water calculator for home ...

Activity 2.2 – Cyrosphere

Mendenhall Lake Two people standing near the water (University of Washington Libraries, n.d.) Mendenhall Lake (Forrest Service, n.d.)   Mendenhall Glacier (Google Earth, 2020) Mendenhall Glacier, Alaska between 1950 and 1970 to 2020   Problem The problem with Mendenhall Glacier is that it has gone through two periods of rapid retreat according to the American Geophysical Union (Pelto,2019). Rapid retreat essentially means that the snow is not accumulating as fast as it is melting. The runoff has now created a reservoir, which did not exist “until after 1910” (Pelto,2019). Looking at the area the glacier is shrinking retracting more inward and losing mass. This tells us that there is some form of heating causing this melting, from either the “atmosphere, geothermal heat flux, fractional heat due to ice flow” ( Lemmons,2022). Geothermal heat flux is when heat accumulates at the base of the ice sheets (Lösing, n.d.). Fractional heat due to ice flow seems ...

Activity 2.1

Atmosphere: Reduce Northwest Vista College’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions        Problem The problem we have with our greenhouse gas emissions I believe is our over all energy use. Naturally any learning facility will use a large amount of electricity due to the number of classrooms and resources needed in those classrooms. Rather than many classrooms using the natural light available to them they choose to also turn on these florescent lights. Green America states that “they waste about half of the energy they produce.” Why would you continue to use a product that one, harms the environment and two, you are not getting the best quality. Investigation As the principal student science advisor to the committee, the practical options I have discovered upon looking at my surroundings on the typical day to help our college’s net emissions of green house gas are cutting down on electricity usage via ensuring the us...

Activity 1.2 Two Main Turning Point Events for Environmental Science Rachel Carson | American Experience Silent Sprint

Image
Rachel Carson | American Experience   Point of View I believe that this video’s point of view is from years down, the road where people, closer to modern times, have begun or already have acknowledged that Rachel Carson’s views were revolutionary. That she, despite everything against her and the odds, wanted to get the facts out there to warn people.   Purpose To show how the American people were shook to their core over a book titled “Silent Spring” by author Rachel Carson. To show the importance of environmental contamination and how miss treated Carson was for her attempts to warn the public. That she was ahead of her time. It shows how DDT was treated almost as though it were a miracle drug when in reality it was damaging the environment. It showed that while the evidence was there, she was the one bold enough to share it with the public.     Questions at Issue The problem prese...
